Foseco
Foseco designs, manufactures and delivers refractory products, systems, and services for high-technology industrial applications. Founded in 1932, the company found early success as a major supplier to the U.S. foundry industry, hence the name FOundry SErvice Company. Today Foseco has a presence in 32 countries and major facilities in Germany, USA, UK, Brazil, China, India, South Korea and Japan.
The company produces a wide range of products including furnace brick linings, flow control products, crucibles used to melt and transfer molten metals, and temperature measurement systems.
By the 1930s and 40s, published medical reports were alerting manufacturers of the dangers of
asbestos exposure. Despite this knowledge, many companies - Foseco included - were using asbestos in many of their products. Heat and fire resistant, durable, and cheap, asbestos was a natural fit for Foseco’s high heat products. It’s estimated that the company used about 18 million pounds of asbestos in its Cleveland plant from 1962 and 1976. Many Foresco workers who breathed in the toxic asbestos dust became sick and some developed
mesothelioma and died as a result of their exposure.
When widespread knowledge of the dangers of asbestos became known in the 1970s, Foseco’s major customers, including Bethlehem Steel and Republic Steel, complained and use of the toxic material was finally halted. When asbestos claims began piling up against the Foseco, company executives claimed that they did not know about the hazards of asbestos until it was too late for many of its workers. Unfortunately for Foseco, company documents discovered during a 2002 asbestos trial proved that company executives knew that the asbestos dust produced in their factories was injuring its workers.
