Federal-Mogul Corporation

Federal-Mogul Corporation is a major automotive supplier to the worldwide market with over $6 billion in annual sales. Based in Springfield, Michigan, Federal-Mogul employs over 43,000 workers around the world. The company was established in 1899 as a two-man shop that sold mill supplies and rubber goods. The Muzzy-Lyon Company quickly diversified however, and within two years the company had set up a subsidiary called the Mogul Metal Company. In 1924 the company merged with Federal-Bearing and Bushing and changed their name to Federal-Mogul.

The company continued to diversify and expand its business throughout the twentieth century and by the early 1980s was supplying NASA with parts for the Space Shuttle program.

Asbestos in Federal-Mogul products

Throughout its explosive growth, Federal-Mogul used asbestos in many of its products that required high insulation or fireproofing properties. Asbestos was a favored material for insulation material because of its amazing ability to resist heat and flame and its low cost. Unfortunately asbestos also has the ability to become embedded in the delicate molecular linings of the internal organs, and are not easily expelled by the body. Over many years the embedded fibers can cause scarring and irritation, a condition that can eventually lead to a range of deadly asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, a rare but terminal form of cancer.

Many Federal-Mogul workers and those who worked with their products have developed asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma as a result of their exposure. Workers who were exposed include factory workers, auto mechanics, shipyard workers, welders, insulators, aerospace workers, railroad employees, and many more.

Federal-Mogul was forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to the mounting number of asbestos claims filed by individuals who felt that company failed to warn workers and the public about the dangers of asbestos exposure. Federal -Mogul emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2007 and established an Asbestos Personal Injury Trust as a condition of their reorganization.
