Bondex International

In the 1960s, Bondex was the only nationwide line of household patch and repair products. Known for their strength and durability, Bondex products were so popular and the company so successful that it was an appealing target for acquisition. In 1966 RPM International bought Bondex, a decision it likely deeply regrets.

This is because Bondex made extensive use of asbestos in its products, exposing its workers and anyone who works with their products to a known carcinogen. Asbestos was a favored material for manufacturers such as Bondex because of its amazing ability to resist heat and flame and its low cost. Unfortunately asbestos also has the ability to become embedded in the delicate molecular linings of the internal organs, and are not easily expelled by the body. Over many years the embedded fibers cause scarring and irritation, a condition that can eventually lead to a range of deadly asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer.

Bondex International has become one of the companies most deeply affected by asbestos claims and mesothelioma lawsuits. Bondex International has been involved in many asbestos and mesothelioma lawsuits over the past two decades, and several years ago the company site aside about $190 million to cover existing and future asbestos-related claims. But that wasn’t enough to cover the actual claims, and in 2010 an additional $288 million was set aside to handle the flood of asbestos claims.

In May, 2010, RPM International filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to resolve the mounting asbestos claims against Bondex.
