Asbestos in Yarn
Concerned that asbestos yarn could cause asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma? Learn more below.
What is asbestos yarn?
Long flexible strands of chrysotile, or “white” asbestos can be spun and twisted into asbestos yarn. The yarn is still widely used for caulking, packing, and sealing heat insulation materials. It is also used to make numerous other asbestos textiles and some asbestos rope.
Asbestos yarn is still manufactured in China, India, and other countries with thriving asbestos industries. It might be surprising to learn that despite its proven links with numerous health issues, including mesothelioma cancer, asbestos has never been banned in the United States. This means that anyone can still import and install asbestos yarn. While chrysotile is generally considered one of the safer asbestos varieties, any exposure to asbestos should be considered dangerous and avoided whenever possible.
Any exposure to asbestos carries the risk of inhaling loose airborne asbestos, which can be embedded in lung and stomach linings. Because of their microscopic fibrous nature, asbestos fibers are very difficult for the body to remove. Over time, the affected tissue lining becomes irritated and then scarred, and years or decades down the road can develop into asbestos related diseases such as gastrointestinal diseases, lung cancer, asbestosis, and even malignant mesothelioma, a rare but deadly form of cancer. Health issues related to asbestos exposure can appear many years after the exposure occurred, so victims may not even be aware that they have been exposed to asbestos until it’s too late.
If you worked with asbestos yarn, you may be at risk of exposure.
