Asbestos in Millboard

asbestos millboardWhat is millboard?

Millboard containing asbestos was used to construct walls and ceilings, usually in high heat areas such as around furnaces, boilers and wood-burning stoves where protection from high heat and fire were critical. Prior to the 1980s, most millboard was made from a high percentage of chrysotile asbestos.

Intact asbestos millboard carries a moderately low risk of asbestos exposure. But once it becomes friable, asbestos millboard becomes dangerous. Friable asbestos is easily inhaled and swallowed, its microscopic fibers becoming lodged in the lungs or abdomen. Asbestos exposure can lead to a long list of serious diseases, including asbestosis and in rare cases, malignant mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that can affect the lungs, stomach or heart.
