Asbestos in Lagging Adhesive

Concerned that exposure to lagging adhesives made with asbestos could lead to asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer? Learn more below.

What is lagging adhesive?

Lagging adhesive is used to seal ducts and ventilation corridors from leaking heated or cooled air. For much of the 20th century, lagging insulation was made with asbestos. It’s easy to see why asbestos was used to make lagging insulation and so many other products – it’s completely fireproof, won’t conduct heat, and was abundant and cheap. Unfortunately it is also a major health risk, and has exposed countless people to a high risk of developing an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma.

Since terrible asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma can take 15-40 years to manifest after the initial exposure, often victims did not realize that they had been harmed by asbestos until it was too late.

Asbestos companies made enormous profits from products such as lagging insulation during the 1950s and 60s, the height of the asbestos craze. And while they knew about the deadly effects of asbestos exposure for decades, they never warned their workers or the public. Asbestos was phased out of products such as lagging insulation starting in the 1970s, when knowledge of its deadly effects became widely known.

Many people think that asbestos has been banned in the United States. This is not true. Although the EPA was successful in banning asbestos in 1989, the ruling was challenged and the ban overturned in 1991. Although most asbestos has been phased out of use in the United States, it is still widely used in countries with lax manufacturing standards such as India and China, who export asbestos products to the United States.

Individuals who manufactured or used lagging insulation that contained asbestos may have unknowingly inhaled microscopic asbestos fibers, the precursor to developing mesothelioma. If you suspect you may have been exposed to asbestos, contact your doctor immediately. You may also have legal rights. Mesothelioma law has developed to help victims receive compensation from the companies that exposed them to asbestos.
