Asbestos in Colorbestos
Colorbestos was a product line of colored cement siding and roofing products manufactured in the mid-twentieth century by Johns-Manville, the leading asbestos manufacturer of its day. Colorbestos products, which included roofing shingles and siding, were touted as a durable, colorful and low-cost way to update homes. While all cement asbestos products can become friable and potentially dangerous if worn or otherwise damaged, the Colorbestos roof shingle was friable from the start. The shingles were designed to imitate the rough-hewn look of slate, so their edges were finished with rough, unfinished beveled edges that potentially released harmful asbestos fibers from the moment they were created.
Asbestos fibers can be inhaled by the thousands in each breath. While many inhaled fibers will make their way out of the body, some can become embedded in the mesothelium, the delicate wall of cells that line many of the body’s internal organs.

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that affects the lungs, heart, or stomach. Asbestos also causes asbestosis, a serious and progressive disease caused by asbestos fibers scarring the lungs and eventually cutting off oxygen supply to the victim. Asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer can lie dormant for many years and decades after the asbestos exposure, suddenly “flowering” without any warning. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world.
