What are asbestos ceiling tiles?

Asbestos ceiling tiles were widely used for most of the last century in homes, offices, schools and other municipal buildings. They were typically used in drop, or suspended ceilings to provide soundproofing and insulation. Ceiling tiles would be suspended from a t-bar frame, allowing an open space between the tiles and ceiling that could house the building’s HVAC system.

Like most other asbestos products, asbestos ceiling tiles were phased out of use starting in the 1970s when the dangers of asbestos exposure became widely known. If you manufactured, installed, or repaired asbestos ceiling tiles, you may be at risk of developing an asbestos related disease, including mesothelioma. This is because any manipulation of the tiles, including cutting, sawing, sanding or grinding the tiles would release microscopic asbestos fibers into the air, where they can remain suspended for hours or days.

Inhaled fibers can become embedded in the mesothelium, the delicate wall of cells that line many of the body’s internal organs. Asbestos exposure has been linked definitively to several types of cancer and other asbestos related diseases. Mesothelioma, or more correctly, malignant mesothelioma, is a rare but deadly form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that affects the lungs, heart, or stomach. Asbestos also causes asbestosis, a serious and progressive disease caused by asbestos fibers scarring the lungs and eventually cutting off oxygen supply to the victim. Asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer can lie dormant for many years and decades after the asbestos exposure, suddenly “flowering” without any warning.

Tragically, asbestos manufacturers knew for decades that their products were hazardous, but squashed any information that may have helped their workers stay safe, including advocating the use of safety equipment. Mesothelioma law has been put in place to help mesothelioma cancer victims win the compensation they deserve.
